School Programs

The Museum is an exciting place of learning for students of all ages. Our education programs have been designed to be multi-sensory in order to provide students with the ultimate learning experience in our recreated village setting. Our skilled costumed interpreters provide village tours as well as structured programs designed to fulfil curriculum expectations. They use open-ended questions throughout all the programs to encourage independent critical thinking. Each program is targeted for a specific grade level; however all can be tailored to meet the unique needs of the class. We can accommodate small and large groups. Our current programs for school groups include:
  • Christmas Past & Present (all levels)
Trace the evolution of Christmas from the 1800's to modern day celebrations. Investigate the origins of traditions including the Christmas tree, Santa Clause and plum pudding. Compare the similarities and differences of holiday festivals around the world.

  • From Bonnets to Ballcaps (JK - Grade 2)
Girls scrubbed the laundry and boys chopped the wood. Discover how chores were divided up among children and adults, boys and girls. Explore the village and learn how early communities lived, worked and played in cooperation with one another throughout the four seasons. Compare the daily life of the early settlers with that of current society by tracing the changes over time.

  • Settlin' In (Core Pioneer Program) (Grade 3)
Set your sights on the museum and explore the joys and hardships of life for the early settlers. Through participation and interaction discover how the early settlers carved out an existence for themselves in the New World wilderness by clearing land, constructing homes and building villages. Investigate the origins and contributions of these early explorers and discover the skills they were taught by their First Nations neighbours.

  • Full Circle (Core First Nations program) (Grades 5 - 8)
As a result of our partnership with the Mississaugas of Scugog Island, students will have the unique opportunity to explore both modern and traditional First Nations culture by walking the trails of our Ojibway Heritage Interpretive Lands, listening to traditional stories in our recreated wigwam and exploring our collection of First Nation artifacts. The role of the environment in shaping culture will be investigated as well as the contributions of the First Nations to the development of Canada and the consequences of their relationship with the settlers.
Programs are $4.50/child for a half-day program and $7.50/child for a full-day program. Teachers and parent helpers are admitted free of charge. All programs include a heritage craft.
